**Tragic Fire in Hougang Flat Claims Two Lives**
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported a devastating incident in Hougang on January 9, 2025. Two individuals lost their lives due to a fire that erupted in a flat. The tragic event unfolded at Block 971, Hougang Street 91, where SCDF firefighters responded to the emergency.
SCDF Responds to the Fire
Upon receiving the distress call at approximately 12:40 pm, SCDF swiftly dispatched personnel to the scene. The fire, which engulfed a unit on the third floor, required immediate attention. Firefighters worked tirelessly, utilizing three water jets to combat the flames. Additionally, a firefighting robot was deployed to ventilate the affected unit.
Challenges Faced by Firefighters
Despite their best efforts, firefighters encountered obstacles while attempting to enter the unit. Excessive items within the premises hindered their access. Amidst the chaos, the SCDF team made a grim discovery within a bedroom – two individuals were found lifeless. Tragically, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.
Evacuation Efforts and Animal Rescue
As a safety precaution, around 30 individuals were evacuated from the block by the police and SCDF officers. The fire was successfully extinguished by 3:15 pm, bringing some relief to the distraught community. Miraculously, amidst the chaos, firefighters managed to save a cat, a bird, and eight rabbits from the burning unit. SCDF is currently investigating the cause of the fire to prevent future tragedies.
