Singapore Welcomes New Auditor-General in February

Singapore is gearing up to welcome a new auditor-general, Mr Ng Wai Choong, who will officially assume his duties on February 8. This announcement was made by the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday, January 10. Mr Ng, who currently holds the position of commissioner of Inland Revenue and chief executive officer of the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS), will be taking over the role from Ms Goh Soon Poh.

Transition of Leadership

Ms Goh, who has been serving as Singapore’s auditor-general for the past six years, will be retiring upon the completion of her term on February 8. During her tenure, she has been instrumental in enhancing the audit strategy of the Auditor-General’s Office (AGO) by leveraging data and technology to improve the quality of audits. Additionally, she has focused on fostering better communication and collaboration with public sector agencies to strengthen public accountability and financial governance.

Impressive Track Record

Having accumulated 40 years of public sector experience, Ms Goh has held various senior management positions in key ministries such as the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Public Service Division, Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Prime Minister’s Office. Her contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2000 and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2015.

Stepping into the Role

As Mr Ng prepares to take on the responsibilities of auditor-general, he brings with him 35 years of public sector experience. His previous roles include deputy secretary of industry at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, chief executive of the Competition Commission of Singapore, deputy secretary of policy at the Ministry of Finance, and chief executive of the Energy Market Authority. Most recently, he has been serving as the commissioner of Inland Revenue and CEO of IRAS.

In recognition of his contributions, Mr Ng was honored with the Public Administration Medal (Silver) in 2006 and the Public Administration Medal (Gold) in 2020.

Through the transition from Ms Goh to Mr Ng, Singapore looks forward to continued excellence in public sector auditing and financial governance. The legacy of Ms Goh’s leadership will serve as a solid foundation for Mr Ng to build upon, ensuring accountability, transparency, and efficiency in the management of public funds. As the new auditor-general takes the helm, the nation anticipates a seamless transition and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism and integrity in the public service.
