Driving Safety Tips in Flash Floods
SINGAPORE – As Singapore braces for a monsoon surge bringing rainy and windy weather over four days starting Friday (Jan 10), the national water agency PUB has issued a warning about potential flash floods.
Avoid Driving Through Floodwaters
Driving through floodwaters can be extremely dangerous, with risks such as engine stalling and aquaplaning. Mr. Wong Che Wey, regional technical training manager at Motul Asia Pacific, emphasized the importance of avoiding driving through water deeper than 15cm or above kerb height. He highlighted that water entering the engine can cause catastrophic damage and advised against taking unnecessary risks.
What to Do If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck
If your vehicle gets stuck in a flash flood, it is crucial not to restart the engine, as this could lead to more water entering and causing further damage. Mr. Wong recommended turning on hazard lights, contacting emergency services or a tow service, and moving to higher ground if water levels rise. Quick and decisive action in such situations can make a significant difference in ensuring safety.
Electric Vehicles and Flood Risks
Despite concerns about electric vehicles malfunctioning in floods, experts reassured that modern EVs are designed with advanced safety features to prevent water damage. Mr. Ler emphasized the fail-safe mechanisms in EVs that disconnect high-voltage systems in emergencies to ensure driver safety. While EVs are generally safe in floods, prolonged exposure to water could pose risks depending on the vehicle’s make and model.
Bus Operators’ Procedures in Floods
Bus operators like SBS Transit, Go-Ahead Singapore, and Tower Transit have established procedures for drivers encountering flooded roads. They prioritize passenger safety by assessing road conditions, contacting operations control centers for guidance, and providing route diversions or skipped bus stops information. These measures ensure that bus services continue to operate safely during flood conditions.
Navigating through flash floods requires caution, preparedness, and quick decision-making. By following safety guidelines and understanding the risks associated with driving in floodwaters, individuals can protect themselves and others during challenging weather conditions. Remember, safety always comes first.
