West Coast GRC MPs Step Up After Iswaran’s Departure

West Coast Group Representation Constituency may be down one Member of Parliament, but the remaining MPs have stepped up to ensure “no gap in service” for residents, said Minister for National Development Desmond Lee.

In a media interview earlier this week, Mr Lee assured that the ground situation has stabilized following the resignation of former transport minister and West Coast MP S Iswaran. He mentioned that the people who were concerned about what happened have now seen the process run its course.

Remaining MPs Ensure Continuity of Service

The situation was described as “very unfortunate” by Mr Lee, but he emphasized that it reflected the transparency and accountability that the PAP government holds itself to. The remaining MPs have taken steps to ensure residents in Iswaran’s West Coast division continue to receive the support they need.

Mr Lee highlighted that building relationships with residents is crucial in understanding their needs and providing them with assurance that their issues will be addressed. This personal touch is essential in maintaining trust and support from the community.

Housing Policies in the Spotlight

As Minister for National Development, Mr Lee oversees Singapore’s housing portfolio, a consistent focal point of elections. He addressed the challenges faced in the housing sector, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as delays in BTO flats and affordability concerns in the resale market.

Mr Lee emphasized the government’s efforts in addressing these challenges, including completing delayed BTO flats and ramping up housing supply. He acknowledged that there are still areas that require attention and ongoing evaluation to ensure that housing policies align with economic cycles and meet the needs of Singaporeans.

Under his leadership, new flat types have been introduced to cater to different demographics, and ongoing data collection and public engagement are essential to evaluate the impact of these measures. Mr Lee reiterated that there is a continuous policy agenda in place, despite the increasing political tempo.

In conclusion, the West Coast GRC MPs have shown resilience and dedication in ensuring that residents receive the support and services they need, even in the face of challenges and changes in leadership. The commitment to building relationships and addressing key issues like housing reflects the ongoing efforts of the government to meet the needs of Singaporeans.
