Singapore is gearing up for its first physical general election rallies in a decade, happening on Thursday night (Apr 24). The People’s Power Party (PPP), Progress Singapore Party (PSP), People’s Action Party (PAP), Workers’ Party (WP), and Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) are all set to hold rallies from 7pm to 10pm. It’s been a while since Singapore saw physical general election rallies, not really sure why this matters, but it’s happening.
The PAP and SDP will be rallying in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong leading the charge at Woodlands Stadium. The SDP’s rally will be at Choa Chu Kang Stadium with their team, including some interesting characters like the founder of an alternative news site and a theatre director. The police have issued permits for these rallies, so it’s all happening.
The PPP will rally in Tampines GRC at Temasek Junior College, where a four-cornered fight is expected among various parties. PSP’s candidate for Marymount SMC will hold their rally at Catholic High School, inviting residents and supporters from all over Singapore to attend. It’s PSP’s “first ever” physical rally, so that’s something to look forward to.
The WP’s rally in Sengkang GRC will take place at a field along Anchorvale Crescent, and they will be facing off against a mostly new PAP slate. The police are expecting large crowds at these rallies, so attendees are encouraged to take public transport. Security checks will be conducted, and people are advised not to bring dangerous items like weapons or glass bottles. It’s going to be an interesting night in Singapore.
