Bangladeshi Caretakers Bringing Joy to Rescue Dogs in Singapore
In a bustling hub of animal shelters and pet-related businesses in the northwestern part of Singapore lies The Animal Lodge on Sungai Tengah Road, home to Save Our Street Dogs (SOSD), a local organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming abandoned stray dogs. At the heart of this compassionate work are Kamruzzaman and Miah Nayem, two dedicated caretakers from Bangladesh who bring love and happiness to over 50 rescue dogs housed at the facility.
The Backbone of SOSD
Kamruzzaman, affectionately known as Babu, found his calling at SOSD 11 years ago through his brother-in-law. With a deep-rooted love for dogs stemming from caring for his own pets back in Bangladesh, the job was a natural fit for him. Nayem, on the other hand, joined the team five years ago after a twist of fate led him to SOSD following the closure of his previous workplace. Both caretakers underwent specialized training to handle the unique challenges of caring for rescue dogs under the guidance of their manager, Kieran Kua.
A Day in the Life of Babu and Nayem
Their day starts early with prayers at 5am before diving into the daily routine of cleaning enclosures, preparing meals, administering medication, and ensuring the well-being of the dogs under their care. Despite the challenges that come with the job, including dealing with unpredictable behavior due to past traumas, Nayem and Babu approach each day with dedication and love for their furry charges.
Bonds Beyond Work
Beyond their duties as caretakers, Babu and Nayem have formed deep connections with the dogs and the shelter community. Volunteers play a crucial role in supporting them, assisting with various tasks and providing companionship. The strong bond between the caretakers and the dogs is evident in their stories, with Babu sharing a special connection with Lucki, a dog he fondly refers to as his heart.
