Singapore was like, “No way!” when foreign embassies tried to stir up trouble over international issues involving other countries. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) made it clear on Wednesday that Singapore ain’t about that drama. They believe that it’s better to handle these complex problems through appropriate diplomatic channels for things to actually get resolved.
The MFA had to speak up after the US embassy in Singapore decided to throw shade at China’s stance on the South China Sea. They posted a video on Facebook on Tuesday, and let’s just say it didn’t sit well with the Chinese embassy in Singapore. The Chinese embassy clapped back on Wednesday, accusing the US embassy of twisting the facts about the whole South China Sea situation.
In the video, the US embassy used visuals and words to compare China’s claim over most of the South China Sea to a rude neighbor trying to claim shared spaces in a public housing block. They even went as far as likening the United Nations International Court of Justice to local town councils, painting China as the neighbor who just ignores what the council says. The US embassy called out China for saying they own the whole South China Sea, even though international law says otherwise. They brought up a ruling from 2016 that dismissed Beijing’s claims as baseless, but China was like, “Nope, we don’t accept that.”
