PacificLight Power Granted Approval to Build Hydrogen-Ready Gas Power Plant in Singapore
Singapore’s push towards decarbonization of its power grid took a significant step forward on Friday, January 3, as PacificLight Power (PLP) announced the approval from the Singapore government to construct a hydrogen-fuelled gas power plant on Jurong Island. This groundbreaking project aligns with the country’s commitment to reducing its reliance on natural gas for power generation.
PacificLight Power’s Bold Initiative
In a strategic move approved by Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA), PLP will spearhead the construction, ownership, and operation of a cutting-edge hydrogen-ready combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) facility. The plant is slated to provide a minimum of 600 megawatts (MW) of power starting from January 2029, marking a significant leap in Singapore’s renewable energy landscape.
This innovative venture by PLP comes on the heels of the successful operation of its existing CCGT facility, established in 2014, boasting a robust capacity of 830 MW. The new hydrogen-ready plant, set to be erected on a greenfield site, is designed to incorporate sustainable practices right from its inception. With the ability to utilize up to 30% hydrogen upon launch and a future target of 100% hydrogen consumption, this facility is poised to be a beacon of environmental consciousness in the region.
PacificLight Power’s Vision for the Future
Furthermore, the upcoming plant will house a state-of-the-art Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), bolstering its capacity and resilience. Impressively, the site’s infrastructure allows for potential expansions, including the integration of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology, underscoring PLP’s commitment to sustainability and adaptability.
In a statement exuding pride and determination, PacificLight CEO Yu Tat Ming expressed gratitude for being entrusted with the pivotal task of delivering transformative projects for Singapore. From the upcoming 100MW Fast Start Project to the groundbreaking hydrogen-ready power plant, PLP remains dedicated to steering the nation towards a low-carbon future.
Singapore’s Energy Transformation Journey
As Singapore grapples with escalating electricity demands driven by burgeoning industries and technological advancements, the need for sustainable power solutions has never been more pressing. Currently, 95% of the country’s electricity is derived from imported natural gas, highlighting the urgency to transition towards greener energy sources.
With ambitious targets set for 2030 and beyond, Singapore aims to establish multiple hydrogen-compatible power plants to accelerate its renewable energy agenda. The collaborative efforts of industry players like PacificLight Power, alongside initiatives like the Centralised Process by EMA to facilitate private investments in new generation capacity, signify a concerted push towards a sustainable and resilient energy ecosystem.
From the looming specter of climate change to the imperative of ensuring reliable power supply, the trajectory of Singapore’s energy landscape is poised for a transformative shift. As the nation marches towards a net-zero emissions future by 2050, ventures like PacificLight Power’s hydrogen-ready gas power plant stand as testament to the unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.
