Singapore: On Friday (May 23), Prime Minister Lawrence Wong announced the appointment of National Development Minister Chee Hong Tat as the new chairman of the Chinese Community Liaison Group (CCLG). Taking over from Law Minister Edwin Tong, who will now serve as the group’s adviser, Mr. Chee is set to lead the group with his extensive experience in engaging with the Chinese community.
Mr. Wong expressed his confidence in Mr. Chee, highlighting his active involvement with the Chinese community since 2015. He emphasized the importance of leadership renewal within key Chinese community organizations to ensure their relevance and dynamism. Mr. Wong also acknowledged Mr. Tong’s contributions during his chairmanship, particularly in engaging with the Chinese community during the COVID-19 pandemic and facilitating settlements between community organizations.
Established in 2000, the CCLG plays a crucial role in enhancing cooperation among various Chinese community groups and improving the government’s relationship with these organizations. With previous chairs including Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Health Minister Ong Ye Kung, the group continues to play a vital role in fostering ties between the government and the Chinese community.
