Neurodiverse Team Interviews President Tharman & Celebrities: The Assembly Spotlight

Singapore was abuzz when a neurodivergent team embarked on the groundbreaking journey of conducting no-holds-barred interviews with prominent figures. Led by facilitator and mentor Grace Lee-Khoo, the team of 23 atypical individuals aged 14 to 44, including teachers, students, nurses, and musicians, with conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, or dyslexia, were part of a unique series called The Assembly.

The Journey to Becoming Journalists

The road to becoming journalists was not without challenges for the participants. Through a series of workshops, they honed their interviewing skills and learned the art of crafting meaningful questions. One participant, Stephanie Fam, who has cerebral palsy, bravely asked singer Kit Chan about her divorce, embodying the essence of courage and honesty that defined The Assembly.

Friendships and Self-Improvement

Beyond interviewing celebrities like President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and radio deejay Joakim Gomez, the participants discovered the joy of friendship. Joel Lee, who has an autism spectrum disorder, struck up a bromance with Vincent Ng and Durkeswaran Krishnan, showcasing the camaraderie that blossomed within the team.

A Force “To Be Reckoned With”

The Assembly was not just about personal growth; it was a platform for the disabled community to showcase their potential and talents. Stephanie Fam emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for neurodivergent individuals to shine and prove their capabilities. The series became a beacon of hope, demonstrating that anyone, regardless of ability, can engage in meaningful conversations and make a difference.

In the end, The Assembly was more than just a show; it was a testament to the resilience, strength, and spirit of the neurodivergent community. As the participants shared their stories, formed bonds, and challenged stereotypes, they showed the world that they are indeed a force “to be reckoned with.”
