Completion of Last Two Pandemic-Delayed BTO Projects; HDB to Build 17,000 Flats in 2021

SINGAPORE: The Housing and Development Board (HDB) has successfully wrapped up all 92 pandemic-delayed Build-to-Order (BTO) projects, with the final two being completed this month. Looking ahead, HDB has announced plans to construct around 17,000 new flats across 27 projects in the coming year, signifying a promising future for housing development in Singapore.

Challenges Overcome

Minister for National Development Desmond Lee expressed gratitude for the construction sector’s resilience in overcoming various challenges brought about by the pandemic. Despite facing numerous setbacks like work stoppages and supply chain disruptions, the completion of all COVID-delayed HDB BTO projects stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the construction ecosystem.

Project Highlights

At Punggol Point Cove, one of the delayed projects, five out of six blocks were completed towards the end of last year, with the final block being finished earlier this month after a 12-month delay. This project comprises a total of 1,179 units, ranging from two-room flexi to five-room flats across six residential blocks. Similarly, at Kempas Residences in the Boon Keng area, the last block was completed in mid-January, following a delay of six months from the original probable completion date.

Post-Pandemic Recovery

In 2024, HDB completed over 18,000 flats across 22 BTO projects, with 17 projects facing pandemic-related delays. The agency noted a steady post-pandemic recovery in the construction industry, highlighted by the completion of projects like Alkaff Breeze, Champions Bliss, Parc Glen @ Tengah, and Grove Spring @ Yishun without any delays. Moving forward, HDB aims to maintain steady progress in completing ongoing projects by learning from past experiences and implementing tighter coordination and monitoring mechanisms.

In conclusion, the successful completion of pandemic-delayed BTO projects marks a significant milestone for HDB and the construction industry in Singapore. As the nation continues to navigate through post-pandemic challenges, the commitment to delivering quality housing remains unwavering, ensuring that residents have access to safe and comfortable homes.

Throughout this journey, it is essential to remember the human element behind these construction projects. Each completed flat represents a new beginning for a family, a place where memories will be made and cherished. By prioritizing quality, efficiency, and innovation, HDB is not just building homes but creating communities where residents can thrive and flourish. As we celebrate these milestones, let us also acknowledge the dedication of the countless individuals working behind the scenes to make these projects a reality. From contractors to consultants to residents, each plays a crucial role in shaping the landscape of Singapore’s housing sector. And as we look towards the future, let us carry forward the lessons learned and the spirit of collaboration that has brought us this far. Together, we can continue to build a better tomorrow, one brick at a time.
