Investigation of NUS Student Protest on Israel-Hamas Conflict
SINGAPORE: An investigation has been launched by the police after a student protest was organized at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict. The protest, held on Monday, involved 124 students and alumni who placed 124 pairs of shoes and a white burial shroud in front of the CREATE research building at NUS. The group behind the protest, known as Students For Palestine Singapore, aims to call for the cessation of partnerships between Singaporean universities and Israeli institutions.
Organized Protest to Mourn Palestinian Students
The protest was organized by Students For Palestine Singapore, a student-led movement advocating for the discontinuation of academic, economic, and political ties between Singapore and Israel. The symbolic act of placing shoes and a burial shroud was meant to mourn and honor Palestinian students who lost their lives during the war. The group highlighted the research alliance between the CREATE building and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which they claim supports the genocide in Gaza.
Police Investigation and Public Order Act
Following the protest, the police confirmed that a report had been lodged, and investigations are currently underway. The police emphasized that public assemblies in Singapore are regulated under the Public Order Act 2009, and organizing or participating in such assemblies without a permit is considered an offense. The police also stated that permits would not be granted for assemblies advocating political causes of foreign entities or those that could incite public disorder.
NUS Response and Unauthorised Act
In response to queries from the media, an NUS spokesperson addressed the protest as an unauthorized act on campus property, leading to a police report being filed. The university’s stance on the protest highlights the complexity of balancing freedom of expression with the need to maintain order and compliance with regulations.
As we navigate through the complexities of political activism, it is essential to recognize the importance of dialogue, understanding, and respect for differing perspectives. The student protest at NUS sheds light on the global impact of conflicts and the role that educational institutions play in facilitating change and awareness. By engaging in discussions and peaceful demonstrations, students are actively shaping the narrative and advocating for meaningful actions to address social injustices.
Through empathy and open communication, we can work towards creating a more inclusive and harmonious society where diverse voices are heard and respected. As we reflect on the events at NUS, let us strive to build bridges of understanding and solidarity, fostering a community where dialogue and mutual respect are at the core of our interactions.
