Former HR Sales Agent Jailed for Defrauding Company of Over $30,000
SINGAPORE: Lim Yi Xiang, a former human resources sales agent, was sentenced to one year and two weeks in jail on Monday, Dec 30, for cheating a client out of S$31,020 (US$22,850) while working as a sales sub-agent for HR firm Weistum Advisory.
Deception Unveiled
Lim, 29, pleaded guilty to two charges of cheating and one charge of absconding. He had evaded authorities while under investigation for his fraudulent activities. The court considered two additional cheating charges in sentencing.
Fabricated Promises
In 2019, Lim responded to an online ad from a trading company director seeking to hire four workers. Lim offered to help with recruitment and secure government grants, claiming Weistum could assist. He persuaded the director to pay S$31,020 for services that Weistum did not provide.
Elaborate Scheme
Using a falsified contract template, Lim replaced Weistum’s bank account details with his own before presenting it to the director for signing. The client transferred funds totaling S$31,020 to Lim between November 2019 and March 2020.
Escape and Recapture
After multiple police investigations, Lim was arrested on Feb 4, 2022, released on bail, and later fled. He was eventually apprehended on Jun 25, 2023. Lim admitted to another cheating offense in March 2021 but failed to make amends to his victims.
In court, Lim expressed remorse and cited family responsibilities, but District Judge Paul Chan emphasized the severity of his actions. Lim’s deliberate deception and breach of trust warranted a harsh sentence.
Lim’s case serves as a reminder of the consequences of fraudulent behavior in the corporate world. The impact of his actions extends beyond monetary loss, affecting trust and integrity in business relationships.
